Caution: Pies on Board

Any savvy foodie in the city has their eyes out for the best deals in town and how to get the biggest bang for their buck. If you don’t have this genetic coding, no worries, I am out to find the best cheap eats in DC and after finding noodles and dumplings at ChinaTown Express, the next deal I spotted was at Dangerously Delicious Pies.

Dangerously Delicious Pies serves up a hot date night special, that includes two pieces of savory pie, two pieces of sweet pie, and two non-alcoholic drinks for $22! Yes, one might be skeptical of a restaurant that offers a deal so sweet but Dangerously Delicious’ location on H Street is grungy yet quaint, a little edgy, and the pie is a-mazing. The atmosphere provides the perfect setting for a casual dinner with friends or a unique date.

To start off with the savory, we got the Chicken Pot Pie and Pulled Pork BBQ Pie. The crusts were flakey but still sturdy and had a perfect slightly salty taste with a hint of sugar. The respective fillings were also awesome, with the Pulled Pork BBQ taking the place of the favorite. The pies were both overflowing with filling, so no stinginess here. We were pleasantly surprised to find a a side salad of arugula and tomatoes along with our heaping plates of pies which had a balsamic dressing that had a hint of honey or agave, giving it a little extra oomph.

On to sweet, while the four of us out for pie date night unintentionally duplicated our savory pie choices we made sure to get four different pieces of sweet pie to have a full panel of treats. We ordered Strawberry and Chocolate Cream Pie, the last slice of Chocolate Pecan, and classic Cherry Pie. We effectively covered almost all the traditional pie choices and the giant slices, blanketed in whipped cream looked irresistible. The strawberry pie tasted a bit like Yoplait Strawberry Yogurt packed into a pie crust, which was good, but not as good as it could have been. The other three pies were knockouts. Each pie had a unique crust, that perfectly suited that pie which was very thoughtful. The Pecan pie had an amazing oozing chocolate caramel binding that was perfectly sweet and salty, while not being too rich. The cherry pies was also exceptional, and was extremely tart, the only way I like my Cherry Pie but it had a sweet lattice with fat sugar granules that countered this tang wonderfully.

Romantic date or not, make sure to check out the perfect partner special at Dangerously Delicious Pies. The punk pie deco decor provides a great setting for an all out comfort food feast. For the amount of food we got, $11 each really did feel like a steal.
